Description
The Best School for Your Child offers parents a guide to identifying the secondary school that will best meet the unique needs, qualities and strengths of their son or daughter. The author is an Australian teacher and high school counsellor.
Selecting the 'right' high school is crucial as it will be the world in which a teenager learns to develop socially, emotionally and morally. The right environment can help children enjoy learning, discover their talents and, possibly, their future career path.
This book offers real-life stories from parents, children and teachers as to how they assessed qualities in different schools – and what mattered to them. The Best School For Your Child demonstrates that to really understand what a school is like, parents need to consider its culture, curricula, reputation, climate, programs and policies.

happychild's Review
The best way to describe this book, in our opinion, is that it truly gets to the essence of what matters in choosing a high school for your child. Erin Shale wisely and empathetically guides parents through the many indicators of whether a school is the best choice for your child. Looking at kids as individuals and looking beyond academic results and community gossip, Erin advises parents on working with their child to examine important factors including school climate and culture, curriculum and extra-curricular activities, location and public versus private options. We especially like the emphasis on the important point that the right high school is "worth its weight in gold" and can make an enormous difference to teenagers' happiness and success.
Highlights/Quotes
"You do not have to begin the search for your child's secondary school the day you discover you are going to become a parent. Look beyond the words in glossy publications and websites and examine the heart of the messages. Does what you find reflect values you want your child to have? Is there evidence of the level of care your child deserves?" "Capable and caring teachers can make or break the experience your child has at school. Gather as much information as possible about the teachers at various schools and the level of staff satisfaction and happiness."
