Description

This is a parenting biography with a difference - 6 months in the lives of a family with three teenagers who somehow survived unplugged from technology, just. For any parent who's ever sent a text to their child at the dinner table - or yanked the modem from its socket in a show of primal parental rage - this account of one family's self-imposed exile from the Information Age will leave you ROFLing with recognition. But it may also challenge you to take stock of your own family connections, to create a media ecology that encourages kids - and parents - to thrive.

At ages 14, 15 and 18, author Susuan Maushart's daughters and son didn’t use media. They inhabited media. Susan’s experiment with her family was a major success and she found that by having less to communicate with, her family was communicating more.

The Winter of Our Disconnect is the story of how one family survived six months of wandering through the desert, digitally speaking, and the lessons learned about themselves and technology along the way. At the same time, their story is a channel to a wider view - into the impact of new media on the lives of families, into the very heart of the meaning of home.

A book for: All parents.

happychild's Review

This book is really a 'must read' for any parent. Susan Maushart has a very funny and astute way of describing her own and her teenagers' addiction to technology. Not only is the book well researched, it is highly readable and honest so I felt like I was getting a privileged bird's eye view of the author's family. By going without technology in the home including mobile 'phones, computers and Playstations Susan Maushart and her understandably reluctant teenagers rediscovered skills, interests and communication that had been buried under their voracious appetite for all things technological. Not at all preachy and so entertaining, I loved this book and I think any parent of a young or older teenager would too. Yvette Vignando
