Non Violent Playstation Games for Teens. Where are they?

By Yvette Vignando - 4th July 2011

Who else has this problem? This one always comes to a head in our house during the school holidays. Where are the entertaining and challenging and fun Playstation Games for teenage boys? I confess I haven't done thorough research on this topic but having two teen boys in our house means that this question is frequently raised.

Perhaps more than some parents, we are very careful about what we allow our teenage boys to play online or on the Playstation. But I am sure there are plenty of parents like me with the same frustration. We also place strict limits on how long and when our children can play online or screen-time games. We get arguments like "Mum, do you think we are going to go out and kill people or steal things if we play that game? We're not idiots." "Mum, we know it's not real, it's only a game." But my husband and I are not budging on this one. We do allow some leeway for historical-style games that have some warfare in them as long as the graphics are not too violent - and even then I wonder if we're making the right decision.

We don't have a large selection of games for the boys to use so we let them borrow them from the local DVD store - our thinking is that eventually they'll find a game they love, and we approve of, and then we'll buy it. But it seems incredibly hard to find a game for teenage boys that is challenging and fun and high energy that does not involve some kind of graphic violence or law-breaking element. There are the car-racing style games of course, but surely there are other genres available?

Please help me on this? Do you have some recommendations for Playstation Games that fit my criteria and would also keep a 13 year old and 15 year old boy happy? Actually, perhaps we could ask Sony. And maybe Sony could sponsor a competition for a game like this - now there's an idea... Really looking forward to your suggestions.
