I Don't Have a Favourite Child - If I Did, I Wouldn't Tell You

By Yvette Vignando - 6th June 2012

The old chestnut - parents having a favourite child - was up for discussion today on Mornings on Channel 9. Journalist Paul Chai read about Jeffrey Kluger's book The Sibling Bond and Kluger's comments about favourite children, then wrote an article admitting that while he loves both his kids, he finds one easier to relate to and easier to bond with. I had a chat about this with Paul and Mornings hosts David Campbell and Sonia Kluger.

Depending on what you read, 100 %, 95%, 70%, 65% or 23% of parents admit to having a favourite child - the bottom line is surely this: some parents find some children easier to parent, have more in common with a particular child, or are attracted to the traits of one particular child. Some say that this is as a result of parental narcissism, others say there is an instinctive human drive to favour one child.

I was interested in one Cornell/Louisiana State University study that said although most adult children claim that their parents have a favourite child - only 41% of them got it right when guessing which child was the favourite - so maybe most parents do a good job of covering up this 'guilty secret'. And that's how it should be. Watch the Mornings segment here.

I have talked about favourite children before here, but my very favourite thing on this website about the subject is this wonderful video where a father asks his toddler daughter who her favourite parent is - definitely worth a watch if you have not seen it - enjoy.
