Oprah Arrives in Sydney - A Girl's Gotta Dream ...

By Yvette Vignando - 13th December 2010

Anyone in Australia who is exposed to any media at the moment will know - Oprah has arrived. I heard there was an "O" on the Sydney Harbour Bridge and fireworks were being let off. More than 350,000 requests were made to receive tickets to the Oprah Show taping in the Sydney Opera House. I was one of the requests - but alas I was unsuccessful in the ballot.

The photo above was taken by the PA of a friend today here in Sydney. It's actually a wonderful picture - and please do not copy it. It's a picture just for you, and no doubt the many others she sent it on to :-)

So why am I writing about Oprah on my blog? For three reasons:

1. I have a kind of nostalgic connected feeling to Oprah because her show was the most interesting thing to watch in the middle of the day when each of our three children were slowly breastfeeding their way through the lunch hour. In between the expert instructions on how to have perfect hair and clothes and how to fold a fitted sheet, I did honestly find many moments of inspiration. In fact I first found out about the chairty Room to Read during an interview with its founder John Wood on Oprah's show; and now happychild is proud to promote the work of Room to Read - please see the left hand side column on this site for more information.

Although my rational mind told me "this is just a talk show" and "most of it is advertising",  I still came away in awe of Oprah's ability to make most topics interesting, to stand up for important causes, and to reinvent herself even in the face of personal hardships. I truly do think that, as far as I can tell from her public persona, Oprah has a high level of emotional intelligence - and I admire that.

2. I have been astounded by the publicity that has surrounded the Oprah visit to Australia. As I sat in a park in a Sydney suburb on Saturday at a picnic party for my nephew's third birthday, I saw a large "O" being drawn in the beautiful blue Sydney sky. Even my mum, who would never watch Oprah, (she already knows how to fold the fitted sheets) knew straight away that the "O" was for Oprah. One day that's my dream for happychild ... not that the name will be written in the sky, but that parents in Australia, and grandparents, will know and trust the name happychild as a place to find great information on children's happiness and emotional wellbeing. A girl's gotta dream hasn't she?

and - 3. I wanted to get your attention with the Oprah picture, and I thought you would like it. That is all.
